Reach Canada and the Ottawa Community Foundation: Legal Clinics, Virtual Education Sessions and More to Come in 2021!

Through the generous support of the Ottawa Community Foundation, Reach has been able to deliver community legal education sessions and legal referral clinics since 2019. We have had over 900 participants register for legal referral clinics and education sessions since the start of this project and our numbers continue to go up.

In pre-pandemic times, Reach’s education sessions and referral clinics took place in-person at community centres and other drop-in locations that are more accessible to clients with disabilities and front-line workers. We were pleased to partner with organizations such as the Elizabeth Fry Society, Centre 454, Centre 507, and St. Joe’s Women’s Shelter, among others, to deliver our legal referral services and education sessions directly to clients.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Reach continued to deliver free education sessions virtually. We have covered topics such as Culture Change in Long Term Care Homes, Planning and Decision Making for Adult Children with Disabilities, Permanent Residency Options of Interest for People with Disabilities, and much more. Our education sessions have reached a wide audience, including front-line workers, legal professionals, as well as families and caregivers of people living with disabilities. We have also continued to build partnerships with community organizations such as Service Coordination and the Canadian Mental Health Association - Ottawa Chapter.

With the ongoing support of the Ottawa Community Foundation, Reach will continue to deliver free virtual education sessions throughout 2021. Our first session of 2021 will be a session held in collaboration with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind focusing on Human Rights, Disability and COVID-19. The session will be held on February 10, 2021 at 11:00 am.

Reach Canada is very thankful to the Ottawa Community Foundation for making our community legal education sessions possible. Stay tuned for more sessions to come this year!
